Piedmont Murder Update

Piedmont, AL – A Calhoun County community is grieving the loss of a 10-year-old girl, Katheryn Bigbee, described as “bright and joyful,” after she was found deceased inside a home late Friday night in a case that has led to a juvenile being charged with murder.

As previously reported according to Piedmont Police Chief Nathan Johnson, officers responded to a report of a missing child and located the girl, identified as Katheryn Bigbee, less than an hour later inside a residence.

“Officers responded immediately to the residence,” Johnson said. “They tragically discovered a deceased juvenile inside the home.”

Authorities have not released details regarding the exact location of the home or whether it was the child’s residence. Due to the ages involved, the identity of the juvenile charged, as well as their relationship to Katheryn, has not been disclosed.

Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown confirmed the cause of death as multiple stab wounds and ruled the manner of death a homicide.

The investigation remains active. Chief Johnson confirmed the case has been turned over to Calhoun County District Attorney Lynn Hammond for further prosecution.

As the investigation continues, those who knew Katheryn are remembering her not through the details of the case, but through the light she brought into their lives.

In a statement released by Piedmont Elementary School, where Katheryn was a student, school officials described a child who left a lasting impression on classmates, teachers, and staff.

“We are heartbroken to share the loss of one of our precious students, Katheryn Bigbee. Our entire Piedmont Elementary School family is grieving as we remember a sweet little girl who brought smiles, kindness, and a bright light to our halls each day,” the statement read.

The school described Katheryn as having a “joyful, spunky personality” and noted her love of reading, adding that she “will be remembered for the happiness she shared so freely.”

Grief counselors have been made available at the school to support students and staff as they cope with the loss.

In the wake of the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist with final expenses. Chief Johnson confirmed the fundraiser has been verified as being organized by the family.

While many questions remain unanswered as the case moves forward through the legal system, the focus throughout Piedmont has shifted toward remembrance — of a young life that, though far too short, touched many.

Community members continue to express support for Katheryn’s family, her classmates, and all those impacted by the loss, as Piedmont begins the difficult process of healing.
