ANNISTON, AL — A group of private citizens and veterans is inviting the public to join in celebrating the 250th birthday of the United States Army on Saturday, June 14, which also marks Flag Day. The event will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. at Noble Street Park, located at the intersection of 11th Street and Noble Street in Anniston, weather permitting.
The gathering is open to everyone, with a special invitation extended to Army veterans, active duty soldiers, members of the National Guard and Reserve, and their families. There is no formal agenda; instead, attendees are encouraged to bring flags, caps, memorabilia, and stories to share as a way of honoring military service and fostering camaraderie.
Organizers plan to serve a large sheet cake while supplies last and hope for a strong turnout to help “run out” of refreshments. The focus of the celebration is on fellowship and shared experiences rather than speeches or ceremonies.
The date holds special significance in American history. On June 14, 1775, the Second Continental Congress established the Continental Army, forming the foundation of the U.S. Army. The following day, George Washington was appointed Commander-in-Chief. Two years later, on June 14, 1777, Congress adopted the national flag, a moment now recognized as the origin of Flag Day. The modern observance of Flag Day began with a Wisconsin schoolteacher in 1885 and was officially designated a national holiday in 1949.
