Gadsden, AL – The Gadsden State Community College Cardinal Foundation has announced the establishment of the Laura Tutor Memorial Nursing Scholarship, created to honor the life and legacy of Laura Tutor, a 2011 magna cum laude graduate of the college’s nursing program.
According to the announcement, Laura Tutor made a mid-career transition into nursing after enrolling at Gadsden State, a decision her family said became one of the most meaningful chapters of her life. Through the program, she pursued a new professional path that ultimately led to a career serving patients throughout Etowah County.
As a certified registered nurse practitioner, Tutor became known for her compassion, professionalism, and dedication to patient care. The scholarship was established by her husband, Phillip Tutor, to help future nursing students pursue similar opportunities.
“Laura believed deeply in the power of education to change lives,” Phillip Tutor said. “Gadsden State gave her the opportunity to pursue a new path, and it brought her so much joy. It is my hope that this scholarship will provide that same opportunity to others—especially those considering a career change or looking for a new beginning.”
The scholarship will support students enrolled in the nursing program at Gadsden State, with special emphasis placed on individuals entering nursing as a second career or beginning a new professional journey.
Hillary Folsom, director of advancement and alumni relations, said the scholarship reflects the impact Tutor had on others through both education and healthcare.
“Laura’s story is a powerful example of how education can transform lives at any stage,” Folsom said. “This scholarship not only honors her memory but also ensures her legacy continues through the students who will follow in her footsteps—serving others with compassion and dedication.”
The Cardinal Foundation is also inviting community members to support the scholarship fund to help provide opportunities for future nursing students in the years ahead.
