Gov. Ivey Awards $6.3 Million to Help Alabama Families Lower Home Energy Costs; Calhoun County Among Areas Receiving Assistance

Gov. Ivey awards more than $6.3 million for weatherization assistance

MONTGOMERY — Gov. Kay Ivey has announced more than $6.3 million in grants to support Alabama’s Weatherization Assistance Program, which helps eligible low-income households reduce energy costs by improving the efficiency and safety of their homes.

The funding, distributed through 13 grants to community action agencies and local partners across the state, will prioritize households that include older adults, people with disabilities and families with children.

“High energy costs can be a significant burden on people who are already struggling to make ends meet,” Gov. Ivey said. “This assistance allows Alabama families to sustainably lower energy bills while creating a safer and healthier living environment.”

Before weatherization work begins, each qualifying home undergoes an energy audit to identify the most cost-effective improvements. Common upgrades include adding insulation, sealing air leaks around doors and windows, and making other energy-efficiency improvements designed to reduce heating and cooling costs.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) is administering the program using funds provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

“The Weatherization Assistance Program benefits some of the most vulnerable residents in communities throughout the state,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA is pleased to join Gov. Ivey in support of these grants, which will help families reduce the cost of heating and cooling their homes.”

The Community Action Agency of Talladega, Clay, Randolph, Calhoun and Cleburne Counties Inc. was awarded $359,678 to serve residents in Calhoun, Cleburne, Clay, Randolph and Talladega counties.

Residents interested in applying for weatherization assistance should contact the agency at (256) 781-0004 or visit communityactiontcrcc.com to determine eligibility and learn when local applications will be accepted. State officials noted that funding announced this week may not be immediately available, as application periods are established by each local agency.

Statewide, the Weatherization Assistance Program is designed to help qualifying households lower monthly utility costs while creating healthier, safer and more energy-efficient homes.
