MONTGOMERY, AL — Governor Kay Ivey announced Thursday that more than $3.6 million in state funding has been awarded for 11 transportation improvement projects across Alabama through the second round of the Alabama Department of Transportation’s (ALDOT) Rebuild Alabama Annual Grant Program.
The awards provide $3,648,487.44 in state funding and leverage $1,547,828.41 in local matching funds, bringing the total investment for the projects to more than $5.19 million.
The grants are funded through the Rebuild Alabama Act, which was approved by the Alabama Legislature and signed into law by Gov. Ivey in 2019. The law requires ALDOT to dedicate at least $10 million annually from the state’s share of gas tax revenue for local transportation projects. Additional grant funding is expected to be awarded later this year.
“Strong, safe and reliable infrastructure is one of the reasons our state attracts record-breaking investments and jobs,” Ivey said. “Rebuild Alabama is delivering lasting improvements, ensuring we have the strong transportation network needed to support our growing economy and those who drive our roads and bridges. We are keeping our foot on the gas and will continue to invest in infrastructure that serves every corner of Alabama.”
The selected projects include road resurfacing, bridge replacement, drainage improvements and culvert replacement in municipalities and counties across the state. Communities receiving awards in this round include Robertsdale, Lineville, Samson, Gordon, Detroit, Owens Cross Roads, Winfield, Moody, Tallassee, Etowah County and Washington County.
Among the projects is a $350,000 state grant awarded to Etowah County for the replacement of a bridge on Whorton Bend Road over an unnamed tributary. Local officials are contributing an additional $188,710, bringing the total project investment to $538,710.
According to the announced awards, Calhoun County did not receive funding in this round of the Rebuild Alabama Annual Grant Program.
Cities and counties receiving grants are required to begin their approved projects within one year of the funding award.
Since the Rebuild Alabama Act was enacted, ALDOT’s Annual Grant Program has awarded more than $81.8 million in state transportation funding for local infrastructure projects.
