Governor Ivey Announces $500,000 Grant to Support Traffic and Economic Growth in Glencoe

Gov. Ivey announces grant to improve traffic safety in Glencoe

Montgomery, AL – Governor Kay Ivey has announced a $500,000 grant aimed at improving traffic safety, efficiency, and access to future development in the growing city of Glencoe.

The grant, awarded through the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC)—a federal-state partnership focused on fostering economic growth in Appalachian communities—will fund major roadway improvements along Chastain Boulevard West (U.S. Highway 431), West Air Depot Road, and West Main Street.

“Glencoe’s growth means economic opportunity, commercial development and the need for traffic safety improvements with busier roads,” Gov. Ivey said. “I am pleased to announce this grant to support these needed improvements.”

City leaders say the planned upgrades will enhance both public safety and economic vitality. The project includes construction of an access road parallel to Chastain Boulevard and the addition of a turn lane from Chastain Boulevard to ease congestion and improve traffic flow.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) will administer the ARC program in Alabama.

“Economic growth is great for a community, but it should not come at the cost of creating traffic hazards,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “I commend Glencoe leaders for their attention to all aspects of development and growth.”

Governor Ivey notified Glencoe Mayor Chris Hare of the grant approval earlier this week.

The Appalachian Regional Commission is a collaborative economic development agency representing the federal government and 13 state governments. Its mission is to strengthen economic growth across the Appalachian region, helping communities reach socioeconomic parity with the rest of the nation. Thirty-seven Alabama counties, including Etowah County, are eligible for ARC funding.
