Calhoun County, AL — A routine day for Calhoun County Animal Control turned into a life-saving mission when officers responded to a call about a dog trapped in a cold creek. The frightened and exhausted animal was found shivering in frigid water but, thanks to quick teamwork and persistence, was safely rescued.
Animal Control officials described the rescue as both emotional and rewarding. “Sometimes, the calls we get take our breath away,” the department shared. “The water was cold, and she was shivering, scared, and exhausted. But she never gave up. With teamwork, patience, and a lot of heart, we got her out safely. She’s now warm, dry, and has a full belly—safe at last.”
Animal Control Director Naomi Richards spoke with the Calhoun Journal about the incident, emphasizing the spirit of collaboration involved.
“This was truly a beautiful joint effort between our community and animal control,” Richards said. “I’m deeply thankful for everyone’s dedication and quick action that came together to save this dog’s life.”
Calhoun County Commission Chairman Terry Howell also commended the rescue, noting the department’s ongoing commitment to responsible animal care.
“We’re glad this rescue was successful,” Howell told the Calhoun Journal. “I’d like to think the dog just wandered into the creek and was spotted so we could get her out. I hope it wasn’t a drop-off situation, but regardless, we have to continue to work on spay, neuter, and responsible ownership. With our new facility out on McClellan, we’re pushing to raise public standards for animal care.” *The charimain was not asked about spay and neuter, but the chairman continues to make the public aware of the importance.
Though Animal Control staff say they don’t always have time to share every rescue story, they want the public to know their commitment runs deep. “Every life matters to us,” the department said. “Whether it’s out in the field, in the shelter, or behind the scenes—it truly takes a community.”
