Montgomery, AL – In response to the prevailing dry conditions in Alabama, Governor Kay Ivey has taken decisive action by signing a statewide Drought Emergency Declaration, commonly known as a ‘No Burn Order.’ The order, effective from November 9, 2023, at 8:00 a.m. Central Standard Time, prohibits all outdoor burning throughout the state.
Alabama is grappling with extremely dry conditions, heightening the risk of potentially hazardous wildfire activity. Governor Ivey commended the continuous efforts of State Forester Rick Oates and his team, who have been tirelessly working to maintain the safety of forests and contain fires.
“This declaration is meant to prevent unnecessary burning, reducing the chance of avoidable fires. I urge Alabamians to heed this warning,” Governor Ivey stated.
The Alabama Forestry Commission (AFC) has been actively responding to the escalating situation since the statewide Fire Alert was issued on October 24. As of now, AFC firefighters have addressed 352 wildfires, resulting in the burning of 3,199 acres across the state.
State Forester Rick Oates emphasized the necessity of these burning restrictions due to the persisting lack of precipitation and the high probability of fuel ignition. He noted a concerning uptick not only in the number but also in the size of wildfires over the past month. Oates highlighted the precarious conditions, where any outdoor fire could swiftly spiral out of control, necessitating more firefighting resources to contain and control.
Despite predictions of some rainfall over the weekend, it is anticipated to be insufficient in alleviating the ongoing wildfire danger.
The Drought Emergency Declaration order will remain in effect until rescinded by the State Forester, indicating a substantial change in conditions that reduces the occurrence and frequency of wildfires.
