Saks, AL – Michael Douglas, a former star of the Harlem Globetrotters and a legend in the world of basketball, visited Saks Elementary School today to share his experiences and insights with the students. His visit came ahead of the highly anticipated Harlem Legends vs. East Alabama All-Stars basketball game, set for November 9 at the Oxford Civic Center.
In an engaging presentation, Douglas captivated the audience with stories from his time with the Globetrotters, describing it as “like Christmas every day.” He recounted his travels to over 100 countries, spreading joy and entertainment through basketball. “We are the ambassadors of goodwill,” he said, reflecting on the happiness the team brings to fans of all ages. He emphasized the impact of their performances, noting how the smiles on children’s faces, ranging from ages 7 to 70, make every game worthwhile.
Douglas actively interacted with the students, posing math problems to encourage engagement and participation. The excitement grew as students answered his questions correctly, earning signed basketball cards and t-shirts as rewards for their efforts.
One of the highlights of Douglas’s career was meeting influential figures such as the Pope and Mother Teresa. He shared how these encounters helped him appreciate the joy he spreads through the sport. “Meeting people from all walks of life has been a wonderful dream and rollercoaster,” he stated.
Douglas also discussed the upcoming event on November 9, where he will compete against the East Alabama All-Stars. He invited the community to join in what promises to be a fun-filled afternoon of basketball and family entertainment. “It’s going to be an afternoon of basketball fun,” he said, urging everyone to attend.
In addition to the game, there will be a special basketball clinic for kids aged 7-14, offering them the chance to learn skills, teamwork, and tricks from the Harlem Legends. “They will get an opportunity to team up with us and learn some of the basic fundamentals of the game,” Douglas explained, underscoring the importance of the event for young aspiring athletes.
Douglas concluded his visit by encouraging everyone to secure their tickets soon, as seating is limited. “Come hang out with us on November 9; it’s going to be a lot of fun!”
This exciting event, sponsored by the Community Enhancement Committee of Hobson City, promises to be a memorable day for the community, with opportunities for both entertainment and education in the sport of basketball.
