Gadsden, AL – In a gesture of community solidarity and commitment to safety, the City of Hokes Bluff has donated a fully-equipped 2015 Ford Explorer to the Gadsden State Community College Police and Public Safety Department. The remarkable aspect of this donation? The cost – a mere one dollar.
Mayor Scott Reeves of Hokes Bluff expressed the city’s dedication to ensuring the safety not only of its own residents but also of those attending Gadsden State. “We want Gadsden State to be as safe as our community,” Mayor Reeves affirmed. “Our city prioritizes safety, and extending this commitment to Gadsden State, where some of our own children pursue education, is only natural.”
The unanimous decision by the Hokes Bluff City Council to surplus the vehicle for a symbolic sum underscores the depth of the city’s commitment to fostering a secure environment for all. Presenting the keys to Dr. Kathy Murphy, president of Gadsden State, and Chief Jay Freeman of the Gadsden State Police and Public Safety Department, Mayor Reeves highlighted the significance of collaboration in maintaining safety standards.
Dr. Murphy expressed gratitude for the growing partnership between Hokes Bluff and Gadsden State, emphasizing the importance of student safety. “We are building a strong police department,” she stated, “and any support from our community partners, like Hokes Bluff, is deeply appreciated.”
The Ford Explorer, equipped with essential police gear including a cage, radar, lights, and sirens, immediately bolsters the resources available to the Gadsden State Police and Public Safety Department. Chief Freeman hailed the donation as a “generous gift,” acknowledging the pivotal role the vehicle will play in enhancing campus security and supporting various college events across all five campuses.
This latest addition marks the third patrol vehicle in the College’s fleet, complementing the existing four public safety vehicles. The establishment of the Police and Public Safety Department last June, under Chief Freeman’s leadership, underscores Gadsden State’s commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment for its students and staff.
