Fourteen Calhoun County wrestlers in eight weight classes have reached the Class 1A-4A semifinals of the 66th AHSAA State Wrestling Championships with the possibility of three all-county state finals.

The 106, 195 and 220 divisions have county wrestlers on each side of their respective brackets and victories in the semifinals would send them to battle for titles. Three other weight classes – 145, 152, 182 – have an all-county semifinal, guaranteeing the county having a wrestler in those championship matches.

Ashville took the first-day lead heading into Saturday’s final day of competition with 82 points. The Bulldogs hold a slim six-point lead over Saint James.

Weaver was third with 65 and Cleburne County, the 1A-4A duals champion, fourth with 55. Rounding out the top 10 after the quarterfinal rounds of the winner’s division and wrestle back division were Deshler (50.5), Westminster Christian (50), Piedmont (48.5), Ranburne (48) and Saks (46).

Ashville and Saint James advanced six wrestlers to the winner’s bracket semifinals while Weaver advance five.

Ranburne heavyweight Carson Hall (24-0) had the shortest time on the mat of the first-day action needing just 15 seconds to win his quarterfinal match and 47 seconds to capture his first-round victory.

Several grapplers remain unbeaten including Weaver 152-pounder Joshua Johannson, who wrestles Ohatchee’s Matthew King in the semifinals. Cody Herrick of Cherokee County and Titus Franklin of Montgomery Catholic square off at 132 pounds with each wrestler perfect this season at 22-0.

Another battle of undefeated wrestlers is scheduled for the 160-pound semifinals between Weaver’s Cody Souder (33-0) and New Hope’s Ricky Toney (23-0), and in the 220-pound semis, Treveon Bolton of Saks (22-0) faces Montevallo’s Hunter Bass (28-0).
