Acclaimed author Anthony Grooms, known for Trouble No More and Bombingham, wrote that Montgomery “renders the fictional Springs, Alabama, in the way that only a writer steeped in the best of the Southern American tradition could,” calling the story “lyrical and poignant.”

John W. Holman, author of Squabble And Other Stories, also praised the novel, stating that The Street of Yearning“evokes a nostalgic past with dreamlike realism and heartfelt characters, appearing, to paraphrase the author, like sudden ghosts out of a dark background.”
