Jacksonville, AL – Jacksonville Police arrested a 21-year-old Jacksonville State University student Wednesday morning on a charge of rape in the first degree following an investigation that began with a welfare check.
According to the Jacksonville Police Department, officers responded early Wednesday morning to a residence in the 600 block of Ivy Row NE after a concerned friend requested a welfare check on behalf of a woman.
When officers arrived, they found Daniel Adegboyega, 21, a Jacksonville State University student and member of the university’s men’s basketball team, according to his public Instagram profile, and a woman at the residence. Police said officers observed that the woman appeared uncomfortable and seemed to want to leave the building.
Officers transported the woman to her residence, where she was interviewed. Investigators also interviewed Adegboyega before placing him under arrest.
Adegboyega was charged with rape in the first degree and is being held at the Calhoun County Jail without bond. A court date has not yet been set and is pending the outcome of an Aniah’s Law hearing.
“We would like our residents to know that this is an isolated incident, and there is no evidence of an ongoing threat to public safety,” Jacksonville Police Chief Marcus Wood said.
As with all criminal charges, the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
