JACKSONVILLE, AL — The Jacksonville State University community is mourning the loss of Elizabeth Brooklynn Barnes, a nursing student from Gadsden who passed away in an automobile accident on Thursday, October 2.
Barnes had recently begun her studies at Jax State this semester, pursuing a degree in nursing. Though she was new to campus, university officials noted that she had already become part of the JSU community.
In a statement, University President Dr. Don C. Killingsworth, Jr. shared condolences on behalf of the university:
“The Jax State family is deeply saddened by the loss of Elizabeth. Although she had only just joined our community, she had already become part of the Jax State family, and her passing is a heartbreaking loss to us all. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Elizabeth’s family, friends, and classmates during this difficult time.”
A celebration of Barnes’ life will be held on Tuesday, October 7, at Gadsden First United Methodist Church. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m., followed by a service at 4 p.m. The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her honor to the Humane Society Pet Rescue and Adoption.
Jacksonville State University has made counseling services available to students, faculty, and staff seeking support. Counseling Services may be reached at 256-782-5475 during business hours, and through University Police at 256-782-5050 after hours to connect with an on-call counselor.
