Jacksonville State University To Host Annual Deaf and Hard of Hearing College Prep Camp

Jax State Hosting Annual Deaf and Hard of Hearing College Prep Summer Camp

Jacksonville, AL – As originally reported by Brett Buckner of JSU’s Media Department, Jacksonville State University (JSU), in partnership with the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services (ADRS), is once again hosting its long-standing Deaf and Hard of Hearing College Prep Camp, a transformative program now in its 21st year. Running from June 1 through June 7, this annual summer camp welcomes high school juniors and seniors with hearing loss to JSU’s campus for a week of immersive college preparation.

Students are referred to the program by their Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor with ADRS. During their time on campus, participants stay overnight in university dormitories, dine in the student cafeteria, and engage in structured activities designed to support a successful transition to post-secondary education.

“Our camp offers students an opportunity to learn about self-advocacy and what they will need to be successful in college,” said Jennifer Yocum, the camp coordinator who has been involved with the program since 2006. “In high school, parents often handle accommodations like interpreters or listening devices. In college, students must take the lead to ensure those supports are in place.”

The camp curriculum includes lessons on time management, study habits, self-advocacy, and learning styles. A simulated college lecture helps prepare students for classroom expectations, and a career exploration module allows them to research fields of interest. Campers conclude the week by presenting their career research through PowerPoint presentations.

The program also incorporates former participants as student Resident Assistants (RAs), offering peer support and guidance. “They are a great resource for students because they’ve been in their shoes,” Yocum added. A dedicated team of professional staff remains on campus throughout the week to provide additional support.
