JACKSONVILLE, AL — The Jacksonville State University Field School will offer a guided archaeology tour Saturday, Aug. 15, taking participants to historic and archaeological sites throughout Calhoun and St. Clair counties.
The tour will be led by JSU’s Dr. Harry Holstein and is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants will depart from the Jacksonville State University campus, with transportation to the tour sites provided in a Jax State van.
The trip will include visits to several sites highlighting the history and archaeology of northeast Alabama. Planned stops include the Civil War-era Janney Iron Furnace, a site associated with a 19th-century Creek Indian War massacre, historic river locks and a prehistoric Native American village.
Organizers said the tour will include light hiking over uneven terrain. Participants are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for walking throughout the day.
A picnic lunch is also planned. Participants may purchase food during a scheduled stop at Jack’s or bring a packed lunch.
Registration is required, and space is limited. The cost is $40 per person for participants ages 14 and older. No refunds will be available after Aug. 5.
The tour is free for Jacksonville State University students with a promotional code. Jax State teachers can receive a 20% discount with a promotional code.
