ANNISTON — The Junior League of Anniston-Calhoun (JLAC), in collaboration with Hispaños Unidos, hosted a Día de los Muertos event this year that celebrated tradition while fostering community education.
The event was designed to provide visibility and a sense of belonging for members of the local Hispanic population while also educating non-Hispanic residents about the meaning and significance of the holiday. JLAC worked closely with Hispanic community members and the Southern Poverty Law Center to create a safe and inclusive space where traditions could be shared openly.
Community members gathered to honor loved ones through photographs, memories, and dance. Latino Teen Dance performed traditional folk dances, while authentic Hispanic vendors offered food and crafts. Several ofrendas were set up, allowing attendees to leave gifts or light candles in remembrance of family and friends.
The event not only highlighted Hispanic heritage but also strengthened community ties. JLAC noted that several women have since expressed interest in joining the organization, and planning is already underway for next year’s celebration.
