OXFORD, AL — Tragedy struck early Sunday morning when a mobile home fire claimed the lives of a mother and her daughter in Oxford. The Oxford Fire Department responded to the blaze at 327 Athens Street at 5:48 a.m. on January 19, 2025. Firefighters arrived within five minutes to find the home fully engulfed in flames, with reports of entrapment.
A 16-year-old male, who had managed to escape the inferno, informed responders that his mother and sister were still inside. Despite the intense conditions, Oxford firefighters entered the burning structure and located the victims, identified as 40-year-old Dynasty Chivers and 19-year-old Navia Martinez. Tragically, both were pronounced dead at the scene by the Calhoun County Coroner’s Office.
The 16-year-old male was transported to Regional Medical Center in Anniston with non-life-threatening injuries. His identity has not been released.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Oxford Fire Department, Oxford Police Department, and the Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Fire Chief Gary L. Sparks praised the efforts of his team, emphasizing their dedication to rescuing the victims despite the dangerous conditions. “Our hearts go out to the family and friends affected by this tragedy,” Sparks said.
