The service provides help with issues including disaster relief, food access, healthcare, mental health support, insurance, stable housing, utility payments, veteran services and childcare. Officials note that the service is free, confidential and accessible in 99 percent of communities across the country, with support offered in more than 180 languages.

“211 is an unmatched, critical, go-to service that provides connection and support to those who need help for a range of needs,” said Shannon Jenkins, President and CEO of United Way of East Central Alabama. “During 211 Day, we aim to express appreciation to the call specialists who provide support to help our community members and celebrate this lifeline that is helping thousands here in Calhoun, Cleburne and Randolph counties.”

Established in 2000 by the Federal Communications Commission as the three-digit number for health, human and social service referrals, 211 has become a central hub for community support across North America. While available year-round, the service is often relied upon during disasters such as hurricanes, flooding and wildfires to provide accurate information and help keep emergency 911 lines open for urgent situations.

Local data shows increasing demand for assistance. In 2025, the service received 5,766 requests from residents in Calhoun, Cleburne and Randolph counties through calls, texts, online chats and website messages. Reports indicate a rise in requests related to housing and shelter, utility assistance and food support.

Community leaders encourage residents to call, text or chat 211 if they or someone they know needs assistance and to share information about the service with others who may benefit.
