Family Success Center

Gadsden, AL – The Calhoun Journal had the chance to speak with Family Success Center Executive Director Emma Clapp and Resource Development Director Katie Bohannon. The Family Success Center, headquartered in Gadsden, extends its compassionate services beyond city limits – reaching multiple counties, including Calhoun County. While rooted in Etowah County, the Center is determined to emphasize its commitment to serving a broader community. Recognizing the diverse needs of residents in various areas, the Family Success Center actively collaborates with partners in different counties, ensuring that its valuable programs and support are accessible to a wide range of individuals and families. Currently working on expanding its footprint in Calhoun County, the Center seeks to strengthen its presence and make residents aware that their services are readily available. With a mission to enhance the well-being of families, the Family Success Center aims to create a positive impact across multiple communities, fostering resilience and support for those in need.

The Family Success Center’s roots trace back to visionary community and agency leaders who recognized the need for a centralized family resource center. In 1999, Bob Echols, Karen Owen, Gregg Bennett, Mike Haney, and others collaborated to bring this vision to life. With essential partnerships forged with the City of Gadsden, United Way of Etowah County, and Gadsden State Community College, the Family Success Center emerged as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

The Center’s first director, Marie Franklin Johnson, played a pivotal role in its early years. The temporary location, affectionately called “the blue house,” opened its doors in July 2001. In 2006, the permanent location at 821 East Broad Street became a key part of the East Gadsden Revitalization Project. The Center, built on collaboration and community support, has thrived under the leadership of Mrs. Johnson and subsequent directors, such as its current leader, Clapp. Clapp’s guidance propelled the Center into expansion, growing programming and building upon the foundation laid years ago.

“The mission of Family Success Center is to strengthen families until they are financially stable, emotionally healthy, and non-violent,” said Clapp. “Our staff is committed to upholding this mission each day. In the past year, we were able to provide over 226,000 units of service.”

The Family Success Center is a one-stop resource center offering over 40 programs that address a wide range of challenges faced by individuals and families. From domestic abuse to house fires, natural disasters, and medical crises, the Center strives to be a beacon of support during difficult times. The services extend to both in-person and telecommunication-based counseling, alongside assistance with transportation to various appointments.

The Center’s programs encompass various aspects of family life, including marriage and relationship education, financial stability coaching, child abuse prevention, counseling services, and community awareness initiatives. Notable programs include:

  1. Healthy Marriage and Relationship Program for Couples
  2. Youth Relationship Initiative

Current Director Emma Clapp emphasizes the importance of meeting families where they are, providing immediate assistance for urgent needs, and addressing long-term challenges collaboratively. The Center’s commitment to a non-judgmental and unbiased approach ensures that individuals feel comfortable seeking help without the burden of shame.

As the Family Success Center looks to the future, Clapp envisions continual needs assessments to adapt to the evolving community. Focusing on mental health, substance abuse, children and adults with disabilities, and homelessness, the center aims to expand its programming to address these underserved areas.
