Norfolk Southern Donates More Than $450,000 to Children’s of Alabama

Birmingham, AL – Children’s of Alabama has announced a major investment from Norfolk Southern to support critical care services for children across the state. The railway company has committed more than $450,000 to enhance the hospital’s capacity to provide life-saving treatment and to strengthen medical training programs for clinical teams statewide.

“Norfolk Southern is honored to support Children’s of Alabama as they expand their Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and enhance simulation training,” said Mark George, President and CEO of Norfolk Southern. “This gift is inspired by the families and care teams whose stories remind us that behind every hospital bed in this system is a child with dreams, a family with hope, and a team fighting for their future.”

The contribution will help complete the hospital’s ongoing expansion of its Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), allowing Children’s of Alabama to serve more critically ill patients and meet the increasing demand for specialized pediatric care in the Southeast. Funding will also be used to purchase two high-tech simulation training manikins to support medical education through the Pediatric Simulation Center and the Children’s of Alabama Community Healthcare Education Simulation Program (COACHES). These programs train healthcare professionals across Alabama in advanced pediatric care scenarios.

“We are grateful to Norfolk Southern for their generous support, which will have a lasting impact on the care we provide to our patients,” said Tom Shufflebarger, President and CEO of Children’s of Alabama.
