Northeast Alabama Patient Care Advances with First-in-State GI Procedure at RMC in Anniston

RMC Achieves First-in-State GI Milestone

Anniston, AL — Regional Medical Center (RMC) has placed Anniston and Calhoun County in the statewide spotlight by becoming the first hospital in Alabama to perform a groundbreaking gastroenterology procedure. The achievement underscores RMC’s commitment to combining innovation with compassionate care for patients across East Alabama and beyond.

The procedure, performed by Dr. Mohamad Eloubeidi, RMC’s Director of Endoscopy and President of the Alabama Gastroenterology Society, represents a significant advancement in diagnostic medicine. Using a new device designed to capture larger and more intact tissue samples, the technology provides more precise diagnostic information and enables physicians to offer patients more personalized treatment options.

“This technology allows us to collect more robust samples, which means we can identify more markers and tailor care in ways that weren’t always possible before,” said Dr. Eloubeidi, who has nearly 31 years of clinical experience and more than 300 peer-reviewed publications. “It’s a step forward in personalized medicine, and I’m proud we’re offering that right here at RMC.”

The milestone has already drawn patients from outside the area. A recent case involved an individual traveling from Huntsville to Anniston specifically to undergo the procedure, highlighting RMC’s growing reputation as a center of advanced care.

Dr. Eloubeidi praised the hospital’s gastroenterology lab, describing it as one of the best in the country. “The GI team at RMC is constantly looking for ways to bring the best of the best to our patients,” he said. “In my opinion, we have one of the best GI labs in the country—paired with compassionate care and a commitment to innovation that makes a real difference.”

RMC CEO Keith Parrott emphasized the broader impact for the region. “When patients in our community have access to the same level of innovation as the nation’s top medical centers, it changes what’s possible for their care,” Parrott said. “This achievement reflects our commitment to investing in advanced technology, attracting top physicians, and ensuring people don’t have to go out of town to receive exceptional care.”

With this milestone, RMC continues to strengthen its role as a trusted leader in healthcare for East Alabama. Serving more than 1,600 employees, 300 volunteers, and over 200 physicians across a wide range of specialties, the hospital is accredited by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer and holds distinctions for orthopedic and maternity care.

By bringing first-in-state innovation directly to the local community, RMC has further positioned Anniston as a hub for advanced, patient-centered healthcare.
