Ohatchee, AL – The Ohatchee Town Council approved several measures during its June 9th meeting, including plans to replace a town tractor, pursue directional signage for local recreational facilities, and move forward with a major grant application aimed at improving Harts Ferry Park.
Prior to the regular meeting, town officials discussed the condition of a town-owned tractor that has been in service for more than two decades. Officials said repairs would exceed $10,000 while still leaving the equipment with significant wear and tear. As a result, the council later approved the purchase of a new or used tractor with a side mower at a cost not to exceed $100,000.
Council members also discussed the need for directional signs to help visitors locate the town’s ball fields. Officials explored potential locations along Highway 77, Highway 144, River Road and Harts Ferry Road, while noting that any permanent signage along state highways would require approval through the Alabama Department of Transportation.
Another major topic involved ongoing efforts to secure grant funding for community projects. The council approved Resolution 26-05-03, authorizing an application for Transportation Alternatives Program funding through the Alabama Department of Transportation for the Harts Ferry Pedestrian Access Improvement Project. The project would require a local match of $200,000 and is tied to a larger grant effort focused on improving public access and amenities at Harts Ferry Park.
Town leaders said they are also pursuing approximately $1 million in grant funding for improvements at the park. Proposed projects include shoreline stabilization, a boardwalk, walking trails, pavilions, restroom facilities and parking improvements.
Officials provided an update on efforts to secure transportation assistance for local senior citizens. The town recently applied for grant funding that could provide a passenger bus capable of transporting up to 10 riders plus one wheelchair passenger. Additional details are expected to be finalized at a future meeting.
The council also highlighted improvements at Harts Ferry following the installation of security cameras. Officials reported that a longstanding litter problem at the area appeared to have significantly improved.
During the meeting, the Town of Ohatchee presented a Life Saving Award to Officer Josh Green of the Ohatchee Police Department. According to town officials, Green responded to a welfare check on May 27 involving a local resident experiencing a medical emergency. After forcing entry into the residence and working alongside paramedic Ian Looney, emergency care was provided that officials said helped save the resident’s life. Looney was unable to attend the meeting and is expected to receive his award at a future council meeting.
Council members also discussed preparations for upcoming Independence Day festivities, including fireworks, entertainment and accessibility accommodations for attendees.
Additional discussion focused on road maintenance needs throughout the community. Town officials said they are working with Calhoun County to address drainage concerns, potholes and roadway repairs, including work planned for areas in Mohawk Estates and other sections of town.
