Ohatchee Man Shot by Homeowner During Attempted Theft

Ohatchee, AL – On December 27, 2023 at approximately 2 am, the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a possible man shot in the 900 block of Pope Rd. in Ohatchee. Deputies were dispatched and upon arrival located a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Deputies provided first aid until medics arrived and prepared the victim for transport to UAB via ambulance.

During the investigation it was learned that the victim of the shooting was on the homeowners property, located on Peeks Hill Rd. in Ohatchee, with another unidentified male and were attempting to remove items from a vehicle. The homeowner exited his residence and approached the two offenders. During the interaction the homeowner fired at the offenders where he struck the one. The victim of the gunshot wound fled the area and returned to his residence on Pope Rd and requested medical assistance.

The Sheriff’s Office has advised there are no charges at this time as the investigation is still underway. It is expected that the two males involved in the trespassing and attempted theft will be charged. The shooting may be brought before a grand jury at later time. The shooting victim was treated and released at UAB the same day.
