OXFORD, AL — The Oxford City Council addressed property matters, city services, public safety agreements and other business during its Tuesday, Aug. 25 meeting.
The council received a presentation of the city’s Fiscal Year 2025 audit from Phil Bain of Kemp and Associates.
Council members also held a public hearing concerning a structure at 1214 Barry Street. The hearing provided an opportunity for comments regarding a condemnation notice sent to property owner T. Le Dung and for cause to be shown as to why the structure should not be condemned. Following the hearing, the council unanimously approved Resolution No. 2026-67 condemning the structure.
In separate action, the council approved Ordinance No. 2026-27 annexing the property of Brookside Baptist Church at 405 Kirby Road. The ordinance passed 4-0, with Councilman Chris Spurlin abstaining.
The council unanimously approved its consent agenda, which included several agreements and resolutions affecting city operations. Among those was an agreement with the East Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission for Fixed Route and ADA Paratransit Services for Fiscal Year 2027. The council also authorized an extension agreement for garbage and refuse collection and disposal with Arrow Disposal Service Inc./Meridian Waste Alabama LLC through September 2029.
The consent agenda also included accepting the dedication of Parkway Crossing as a public right of way and declaring a six-month moratorium on the issuance of licenses for the sale of consumable hemp products.
Council members approved an agreement between the city, the Calhoun County Commission and the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office for the housing of municipal inmates. Another approved agreement involving the Oxford City Board of Education, Hope Christian Academy and Trinity Christian Academy provides for the establishment of high school fire bridge programs.
The council also scheduled two zoning public hearings for its Sept. 8 meeting. One concerns a request from Marshall McKinney to zone property at 3105 Apple Valley Lane as Residential 1 District. The second concerns a request from Hurst Property Management to rezone property at 49952 Alabama Highway 21 from Residential 1 District to Planned Development 1 District. Both requests were considered by the Oxford Planning Commission at its Aug. 4 meeting.
The Oxford City Council’s next regular meeting is scheduled for Sept. 8.
