OXFORD, AL — The Oxford City Council met Tuesday, June 23, recognizing local achievements, honoring police department promotions, approving several resolutions, and receiving an update on a proposed healthcare project that could expand emergency services in the region.
During the meeting, council members recognized the Oxford Mountain Bike Team for winning a state championship.
The council also honored three members of the Oxford Police Department for recent promotions.
Lieutenant Christopher Steffens was recognized for his promotion from Sergeant to Lieutenant. Steffens has served with the Oxford Police Department for 13 years and has worked as a patrol officer, field training officer, Tactical Flight Officer with the department’s Aviation Support Unit, supervisor of the field training program, and most recently as Sergeant of A-Shift.
Scott Glanze and Jonathan Butler were recognized for their promotions from Lieutenant to Captain.
Captain Glanze brings 24 years of experience with the Oxford Police Department, serving in both patrol and investigations. He will now serve as Captain of the Investigations Division.
Captain Butler has 19 years of law enforcement experience and has served in both patrol and investigations. He will now serve as Captain of the Patrol Division.
City officials thanked all three officers for their professionalism, leadership, and dedication to service.
Prior to the regular meeting, city officials discussed a proposed freestanding emergency department planned for Oxford. According to information presented during the work session, Oxford Health Systems and the City of Oxford are supporting efforts by UAB Medicine to seek state approval through Alabama’s Certificate of Need (CON) process for the facility.
Mayor Alton Craft and members of the Oxford City Council signed letters of support for the project, which would serve Oxford and the surrounding East Alabama region if approved. City officials said the proposed facility is intended to improve access to emergency healthcare services, encourage investment in the region’s healthcare system, and support continued growth throughout East Alabama.
The council unanimously approved the consent agenda by a 5-0 vote.
Approved items included:
- Resolution No. 2026-55, naming streets within the Oxford Oaks Subdivision as Oxford Oaks Drive, Rye Hollow Road, and Wildgrass Way.
- Resolution No. 2026-56, ratifying an $8,000 expenditure for the National Junior College Athletic Association Softball World Series Banquet.
- Resolution No. 2026-57, declaring certain city vehicles and equipment surplus and authorizing their sale or disposal.
The council also scheduled a public hearing for July 14, 2026, regarding a rezoning request submitted by Fireside Holdings LLC, represented by Wade Silvey. The request seeks to rezone property located at 8 B Main Street from Residential 1 (R-1) to General Business (GB). The proposal was previously considered by the Oxford Planning Commission during its June 2 meeting.
The next regular meeting of the Oxford City Council is scheduled for July 14, 2026.
