OXFORD, AL — Historic Main Street Oxford has been recognized by Main Street America as part of its America 250 initiative, a nationwide effort highlighting communities, people, places, and stories that have helped shape the United States.
As part of the initiative, Main Street America is featuring Oxford’s educational heritage through the story of Oxford College, an institution that served the community in the late 19th century.
According to information released by Historic Main Street Oxford, community leaders gathered at Oxford Presbyterian Church in 1867 to establish Oxford College. The institution operated until 1900 and provided higher education opportunities for local men and women during its years of service.
Several graduates of Oxford College went on to hold prominent positions in education, government, and public service. Among them were Dr. John William Abercrombie, who later served as president of the University of Alabama and as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives; Harry C. Gunnels, who became Alabama State Superintendent of Education; and Hoyt Smith DeFriese, an educator and attorney who also served as a private counselor to Queen Victoria of England.
Oxford is one of only three Alabama cities selected for recognition through the America 250 initiative, joining Anniston and Atmore.
“We are honored to see Oxford’s history recognized on a national level and are proud to share this story as our nation approaches its 250th anniversary,” said Hunter Gentry, Oxford’s Director of Economic Development and Main Street.
The America 250 initiative aims to celebrate the people, places, and events that have contributed to the nation’s history ahead of the United States’ 250th anniversary in 2026.
