Piedmont Commits To Million Dollar Sewer Project and New Garbage Truck

Piedmont, AL – During the Piedmont City Council meeting on Tuesday, the Council heard from Byrian Watts, Water, Gas, and Sewer Manager, about the need to upgrade the sewer system along the By Pass. The total project is just over one million dollars. Watts ask the Council to adopt a resolution to commit to the project with $500,000 coming from Appalachian Regional Commission funds and $500,000 coming from a 2026 Development Block Grant with a city match of $115,200. The Council Concurred.

City Clerk Carl Hinton informed the Council the City has received a quote on a new garbage truck at a cost of $307,310. The truck will go into production in 2026 and be delivered in 2027. He said they will be trading in the current garbage truck. The Council approved the purchase.

$27,000 was approved for the Electric Department to purchase miscellaneous parts they need for operations to keep the system repaired and maintained.

The Council approved bills for payment in the amount of $977,507 plus payroll expenses in the amount $161,864 for at total of $1,139,371. Mayor Baker explained that $536,085 will be paid with funds from a Wastewater Improvement Grant.

From the Piedmont Police Report for the month of August, 38 arrests were made on 46 misdemeanor charges with 3 felony charges. Officers conducted 574 contacts with the public, 184 District Checks and extra patrols, issued 37 traffic citation and worked 10 traffic accidents. Officers patrolled 9,041 miles. Court Collections for the month were $12,188 with the City retaining $4,182.

In the Fire Department report for August, there were a total of 73 calls with 5 fire, 5 hazardous no fire, 8 service calls, 46 medical service assists, 6 false alarms and 1 weather call.
