Washington DC – U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-AL) joined Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and 13 other Republican senators in nominating conservative activist Charlie Kirk for inclusion in the National Garden of American Heroes, a project established to honor influential figures in U.S. history.
The garden, originally proposed by former President Donald Trump, is slated to open in July 2026 as part of the nation’s celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The project aims to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to America’s heritage, culture, and democracy.
In their nomination letter, the senators wrote, “Through his work, [Charlie] has inspired countless young Americans to engage in civic life and to appreciate the responsibilities of citizenship. His efforts highlight the enduring importance of free expression, active participation, and leadership in strengthening our democracy.”
They continued, “The inclusion of Mr. Kirk in the National Garden would not only honor his personal achievements but would also underscore the vital role that civic engagement plays in our national heritage.”
Erika Kirk, CEO and Board Chair of Turning Point USA and widow of Charlie Kirk, expressed gratitude for the nomination. “My husband’s life was so incredible. Charlie forever changed the direction of this country, and he made it a better place for our children, young people, and families. Charlie’s legacy will be felt for generations to come,” she said. “He was a modern American Founding Father, and he deserves every honor and accolade this nation can bestow.”
Mark Schoeppel, Director of Recruitment and Outreach for the Turning Point USA Chapter at Louisiana State University, added, “We are honored to see Charlie Kirk proposed for such a prestigious and enduring monument to American patriots. We thank Senator Cassidy for his bold thinking and strong leadership, as well as the 14 U.S. Senators who joined him in advancing this noble cause to the President, who himself hailed Charlie as an ‘Evangelist for American liberty.’”
Alongside Senators Britt and Cassidy, the nomination was supported by Senators Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), Mike Lee (R-UT), Roger Marshall (R-KS), John Cornyn (R-TX), Bill Hagerty (R-TN), James Lankford (R-OK), Ted Budd (R-NC), Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), Pete Ricketts (R-NE), Josh Hawley (R-MO), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Bernie Moreno (R-OH), and Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS).
