Each Labor Day weekend there is a significant uptick in driving while impaired charges as many law enforcement agencies conduct stronger enforcement techniques. The reason this is done is to remove impaired drivers who may cause injuries during a more congested travel weekend. The National Safety council estimates that 466 people nationwide will be killed in traffic related crashes during the Labor Day weekend.
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, and all of the municipal police departments, will be out heavily this long weekend to enforce the traffic laws and keep residents safer from drivers that may not be paying attention.
There are many options available to residents that may have had too much to drink. Some of these options are Uber, taxis, public transit when available, and calling a sober family member or friend.
Sheriff Matthew Wade also wanted to remind everyone that this is a long weekend and “The judges don’t come back until Tuesday.” Although the courts may be closed the County Jail and Municipal Jails are always open for people that break the law. The Sheriff wants everyone to have a fun weekend and remain safe and drive sober.
