Bear and Sons

When I began my series of Small Business Spotlights, The Moon first came to my mind because it is so unique and mysterious, I needed to find out more! Ms. Robbie Whitman is the owner and was kind enough to talk with me and tell me all about her shop.

  • Tammy (T): What kind of products does The Moon carry?
  • Robbie (R): Things that are earthy and natural. We try to get things made from the earth. Wood baskets, rocks, crystals, blown glass balls, Celtic crosses, tapestries, a lot of jewelry.  A local artist does a lot of things here, soaps, candles, macrame, bird feeders, and they’re all from locals here in the area.
  • T: Tell me about how and when The Moon got started?
  • R: I opened the Harvest Moon 21 years ago. It was on 21, near Bo’s Glass, and I had pretty much the same things there that I have here. It was hard trying to find the same vendors that I had then, a lot of people shut down over the years. But luckily I found a lot of new ones so I’m trying to get a lot of different things in here this time at The Moon!
  • T: So why did you decide to start your business here in Jacksonville?
  • R: Well, I love Jacksonville, I’m from Rabbittown, that’s where I live, and I think it’s a great little town.
  • T: What do you love most about running this store?
  • R: The people! I love meeting the people who come in, a lot of students, a lot of people that used to come to the Harvest Moon. So, that makes me feel really good.
  • T: What are your hopes and expectations for the future of the business?
  • R: Well, I’d like to grow. I’m looking for another location, on the square, so I can expand. It’s just a little crowded here at The Moon.
  • T: What are your best sellers or your most unique products?
  • R: I think it would be the rocks and the crystals. A lot of amethyst pieces, citrine, geodes, agates, and a lot of tapestries. A lot of students like the tapestries.
  • T: Where can people find you, in person and online?
  • R: Here at The Moon, it’s 104 Pelham Road South, just off the square. The number is 256-644-5050, I’m here every day except for Sundays and Mondays. I also have a Facebook and Instagram page.
  • T: Is there anything else you’d like for everyone to know?
  • R: Out in this world, be safe and have all the peace that you can get.

Be sure to come by The Moon to check out all the unique products that this little shop has to offer and talk with Ms. Robbie for while! She’s as sweet as can be, and loves what she does.

I hope you enjoyed this Small Business Spotlight. Every week I will be featuring another local small business to find out more about them and how they are making an impact on our community!
