United Way of East Central Alabama Celebrates 70 years

Calhoun County, AL – The United Way of East Central Alabama is celebrating a remarkable milestone – 70 years of dedicated service to the community. Since its founding in 1955, United Way has been a cornerstone of support, empowerment, and change, uniting resources and people to improve lives and build a stronger region.

70 Years of Impact

For seven decades, United Way of East Central Alabama has championed initiatives aimed at addressing critical community needs, such as health, education, financial stability, and disaster relief. Through its programs and partnerships, United Way has touched countless lives and made a profound impact on the region.

Shannon Jenkins, President & CEO of United Way of East Central Alabama, reflects on the organization’s success: “This is a celebration of the past, present, and future. Our success is a testament to the unwavering support of our community, donors, and volunteers who have made our work possible. Together, we have accomplished so much, and we look forward to building on this legacy for generations to come.”

United Way continues to push forward with its mission, collaborating with local partners to create lasting change. As part of its 70th-anniversary celebrations, the organization will host several community events throughout the year, including volunteer opportunities, fundraising campaigns, and a special event to highlight the impact of its programs. These events aim to celebrate the strides made in the community and encourage everyone to continue supporting this critical work.

“We invite everyone to join in celebrating this momentous year,” said Jenkins. “Together, we can continue to create meaningful change and build a brighter future for East Central Alabama.”

The roots of United Way in Calhoun County stretch back to the 1920s, when local Kiwanis and Rotary clubs first combined their fundraising efforts to help children living in poverty. This collaboration led to the creation of the area’s first Community Chest. As the community grew, so did the need for a more structured and larger-scale fundraising initiative. In 1954, the organization was incorporated as United Way of Calhoun County.

In 1996, United Way expanded its reach to include Cleburne and Randolph counties, becoming United Way of East Central Alabama. Today, it remains the largest fundraising effort in the area, generating over $1 million each year to fund 28 community partners and 4 key initiatives.

United Way of East Central Alabama remains dedicated to advancing the common good through a focus on Education, Income & Health – the building blocks of a good quality of life. The organization believes that when a child succeeds in school, a resident finds stable employment, and individuals and families are healthy and safe, the whole community thrives.

In addition to its long-term goals, United Way invests in vital services that address immediate basic needs for the most vulnerable members of the community. These efforts are designed to provide stability and support, allowing individuals and families to work towards a better future.

“We’re seeking to partner with others to invest in programs that create lasting, positive outcomes,” said Jenkins. “Our collective impact will build more vibrant, thriving communities for all of us.”

As United Way of East Central Alabama celebrates its 70th anniversary, it remains focused on creating opportunities for residents across the region. Through continued partnerships, fundraising, and community engagement, United Way is committed to ensuring that the future of East Central Alabama is brighter, healthier, and more prosperous for everyone.
