Vice Mayor Ciara Smith Assumes Office in Anniston

Anniston, AL —  The Mayor of the City of Anniston, Jack Draper, officially submitted his resignation today to the City Clerk, stepping down from his post after years of dedicated public service. Mayor Draper’s departure marks the end of a tenure defined by steady leadership, vision, and a deep commitment to the citizens of Anniston.

City officials, employees, and residents have expressed their heartfelt appreciation for Draper’s years of leadership, noting his integrity and lasting contributions to the community. His service is credited with helping guide Anniston through pivotal developments and challenging times, and his impact will be felt for years to come.

Following the protocols outlined in Article III of Act No. 404, S.430, Regular Session 1953, Vice Mayor Ciara Smith has now assumed the office of Mayor. Smith, who was unanimously appointed Vice Mayor by the Anniston City Council on November 3, 2020, will serve in this capacity until the next Council takes office.

Ciara Smith has now assumed the role of Mayor following the resignation of Jack Draper. Appointed as Vice Mayor in 2020, Smith will serve in this capacity until the next City Council takes office, as outlined by state law.

With Smith’s advancement to Mayor, the Ward 3 council seat is now vacant. As authorized by Ala. Code § 45-8A-23.060, the Anniston City Council may fill the vacancy. The City will begin accepting resumes for the position on Monday, May 5, 2025. Interested applicants should submit their resumes in person at the City Manager’s Office (1129 Noble Street, Anniston, AL 36201) or by email to citymanager@annistonal.gov no later than 4:00 PM on Monday, May 12th.

Eligible candidates will be invited to interview on Thursday, May 15th at 6:00 PM at the Anniston City Meeting Center (1615 Noble St, Anniston, AL 36201).

City officials reaffirmed their commitment to a smooth leadership transition and to maintaining the high level of service the residents of Anniston have come to expect.
