Weaver To Get New Bathrooms at City Park

Weaver, AL – The Weaver City Council met for a regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, 10/25/2022. This was the first meeting with newly sworn in Jeff Clendenning as Mayor as well as new council member Terri Summerlin.

  • Department Reports
    • Public Works – No report, but Christmas tree should be planted by the end of the week depending on weather.
    • Police Department – Chief Bush noted that the Chevy Tahoe was sold for almost $5,600. He also requested the council review removing the first four pay steps for police officers and removing one for dispatchers.
    • Fire Department/Code Enforcement – No report
    • Administrative Department – A decision for the new business clerk position should be reached by the end of the week.

  • Old Business
    • Park Restrooms – Unanimously Approved
      • Bids were received and the lowest bidder was $400,000. After the vote the Mayor will formally be able to accept the bid and enter into a contract for the project.
    • IT Consultants – Brad Campbell Calhoun County 9-1-1
      • A MOU (memorandum of understanding) will be drawn up be the Calhoun County 9-1-1 board and will specify the cost and specifics for the agreement. Once the MOU is completed it will be reviewed by the city for acceptance.
    • COVID Funds Approved for IT – No Action at this time
      • Due to potential grants COVID funds cannot be used for the IT project at this time. If the grant is not received then COVID funds would still be available.
  • New Business
    • Employee Life Insurance – Greg Turner Insurance Planning Services – Unanimously Approved (Tim McRae abstained)
      • A decision was made to purchase life insurance for all full-time employees. The total cost for the year was just under $2,800. This coverage would provide $25,000 for employees and $10,000 for spouse and dependents. In the event of a on the job accident the payout would be doubled. This does not impact existing line of duty (LOD) that the police department has. Employees will have the option to increase coverage if they choose to.
    • Mobile Home Installation – Cooks Mobile Home Park – Passed with one nay got (Nick Bowles)
      • A an exciting mobile home was removed and a new one added to be installed. Per city ordinances all mobile homes have to be approved by the council.
    • Petition for Variance – Carport Installation 1500 Maple Drive – Unanimously Approved
      • The current resident has a requested a variance due to medical need from being a double amputee. The carport would make entry and existing from his vehicle in inclement weather easier.
    • Resolution to remove pay steps for police officers to enable the starting pay to be more in line with competing agencies. Unanimously Approved (Tim McRae abstained)
  • Mayor’s Report – The Christmas Parade will be December 4th at 2:00 pm. The parade will be followed by a band concert and choir concert in the park. After the two concerts the official tree lighting will occur.
