Weaver’s Hometown Hero Begins Cross-Country Journey for Mental Health Awareness

Robert Luna AL to LA Walk

Weaver, AL – This past Saturday, the town of Weaver, Alabama, witnessed the beginning of an extraordinary journey as Chief Petty Officer Robert Luna (Ret) embarked on a mission to walk across America. The event, first reported by the Calhoun Journal on April 6th, brought the community together at Elwell Park to support Luna’s effort to raise awareness about mental health issues faced by veterans and their families.

Luna, a Weaver native, has a story deeply rooted in both his community and military service. Raised in Weaver before relocating to Fort McClellan due to his father’s Marine Corps service, Luna’s commitment to service was established early. After graduating from Weaver High School in 1995, he enlisted in the Coast Guard, dedicating two decades to search and rescue missions.

Upon retiring, Luna faced the same post-service struggles that many veterans experience. The transition from the high-stakes environment of search and rescue to civilian life brought unresolved emotions and mental health challenges to the forefront. These struggles inspired Luna to turn his journey into a mission to break the stigma surrounding mental health and to support fellow veterans and first responders.

The kickoff event at Elwell Park was a momentous occasion. The community gathered to meet Luna, see his specially retrofitted cart, and participate in a day filled with support and solidarity. Mayor Jeff Clendenning humorously remarked, “I just hope that you have a flight back. Make sure you go first class. I thank you personally for what you’re doing and the reason you’re doing this. If more people in the United States stood up for what they believe in, we’d be in a better place.”

Luna, visibly moved by the turnout, addressed the crowd: “Thanks to the band, cheerleaders, and all my friends and family here. It’s been a wild ride and a year of preparation. I appreciate everyone coming out. Enjoy the band, the hotdogs by the Lions Club, and the free drinks and chips. Let’s create some good memories this morning.”

The ceremony included performances by the Weaver High School Band and cheers from the school’s cheerleaders. Attendees were invited to join Luna for a ceremonial walk around the park, carrying American flags in a show of unity and support. Reverend Merritt led a prayer to wish Luna well on his journey.

Luna’s walk across America aims to raise $75,000 to initiate mental health programs for military personnel and first responders. With the support of his community and a dedicated online following, Luna’s resolve is unshakeable as he sets out to make a profound impact on mental health awareness.

As Luna began his cross-country trek, the sense of community and support was palpable, marking the start of an inspiring journey dedicated to a noble cause.
