Weaver’s boys take second, qualify for state as a team for the first time in school history. Capps co-medalist. Donoho’s Chandler qualifies for state.
SILVER LAKES — A week after scoring its first-ever tournament victory at sectional, Weaver’s boys’ golf team became a stat qualifier for the first time.
Easton Capps tied for low medalist at 1-under-par 71, and Weaver finished second to Whitesburg Christian in the Class 3A, North 2 substate tourney at Silver Lakes.
The top two teams and top two individuals not playing for the top two teams qualify for state. Weaver has qualified individuals for state but never as a team before Monday.
The Class 3A state tournament is Monday and Tuesday at Highland Oaks, in Dothan.
Whitesburg Christian, led by Parker Williams at 78, shot 318. Weaver was 11 strokes back and edged Lauderdale County by five shots.
Rogers’ Boone Thigpen was co-medalist and prevailed in a playoff with Capps. Lauderdale County’s Kent James was the othr individual state qualifier, finishing third at 77.
Weaver’s other scorers included John Curtis Reeves at 84, Dylan Brown at 86 and Caden Watts at 88.
Chandler qualifies
Donoho’s Carson Chandler shot 77 and finished as the second individual qualifier at the Class 1A-2A South 1 substate at Greenville. He’ll play at state starting Monday in Dothan. Donoho’s boys finished fourth in team standings.
