Jacksonville City Schools Board of Education Holds May Meeting, Highlights Student Achievements and Summer Planning

Jacksonvile, AL – The Jacksonville City Schools Board of Education met Monday evening at the Jacksonville City Schools Central Office Board Room for its regularly scheduled May board meeting, covering financial reports, personnel matters, upcoming graduation events, and student recognitions.

The meeting began with a prayer and pledge led by student Cooper Romain Hayne, who was recognized for his involvement in academics, athletics, dual enrollment, FFA, and other school activities. During the meeting, board members elected officers for the coming term, selecting Phyllis Morrison as board president and Jeff Gossett as vice president.

Board members also voted to maintain board compensation at $600 per month following a brief discussion.

Several students and educators were recognized during the meeting, including music students who participated in a nationally recognized choir performance opportunity in Chicago through the Organization of American Kodály Educators. School officials praised both the students and music instructor for representing Jacksonville City Schools on a national stage.

The board approved minutes from the April 20 meeting before hearing the monthly finance report. According to school officials, Jacksonville City Schools reported a combined reconciled balance of approximately $8.5 million across operating accounts as of March 31, 2026. The board also approved March accounts payable, payroll, and financial statements.

Superintendent Dr. Michael Barber shared updates on upcoming graduation-related events, including senior awards on May 13, baccalaureate services on May 19, and graduation ceremonies scheduled for May 21. Barber noted that approximately 130 students are expected to graduate, making it one of the district’s largest graduating classes in recent years.

Barber also highlighted recent accomplishments across the district, including participation in Special Olympics events, Advanced Placement testing, student involvement in arts and theater programs, and athletic achievements by track and field teams.

In personnel matters, the board approved personnel items labeled A through S as part of what administrators described as the district’s larger annual personnel meeting.

Board members later discussed scheduling the next board meeting for June 9 at 4 p.m., pending final confirmation.

The meeting concluded with board member comments thanking teachers, school staff, nurses, parents, and community supporters for their contributions throughout the school year and during Teacher Appreciation Week.
