Governor Ivey Encourages Alabama Families to Open a Trump Account

Montgomery, AL — Governor Kay Ivey is encouraging Alabama families to learn more about the new Trump Accounts program, a federal initiative designed to provide investment opportunities for children under the age of 18.

According to information released by the Governor’s Office, Trump Accounts are scheduled to launch on July 4, 2026, and are intended to help families build long-term financial security for children through tax-advantaged investment accounts.

Under the program, every eligible child born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028, will receive a $1,000 contribution from the U.S. Treasury into a Trump Account. The accounts are available to U.S. citizens under the age of 18.

Governor Ivey said the program offers families an opportunity to begin investing in their children’s future at an early age.

“As we prepare to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, I thank President Trump for championing an initiative that invests in the future of our nation’s children,” Ivey said. “Trump Accounts will give Alabama families a unique opportunity to help their children take an early step toward achieving the American Dream.”

In addition to the initial federal contribution, individuals may contribute up to $5,000 annually to a child’s account. Program materials state that funds can grow over time through investment returns and additional contributions.

When the account holder reaches age 18, the funds may be used for qualifying expenses such as higher education or the purchase of a first home, while maintaining tax advantages similar to those associated with traditional Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs).

The program also aims to introduce young Americans to investing and long-term financial planning. Once the account holder begins earning income, they may continue making contributions to the account.

Families interested in participating can complete IRS Form 4547. Additional information is available through the Trump Account call center at 866-USA-4547 and at trumpaccounts.gov.
