OXFORD, AL — January 13, 2026 — Mayor Alton Craft announced the promotion of Assistant Fire Chief Ben Stewart to Fire Chief of the Oxford Fire Department**, effective February 1, 2026, following the retirement of longtime Fire Chief Gary Sparks.
Stewart will lead a department consisting of 47 full-time firefighters, including 16 paramedics, two advanced EMTs, and 18 EMT-basics. The department operates with a fleet of specialized vehicles and utilizes modern training methods and technologies to support public safety operations across the city.
In announcing the appointment, Craft highlighted Stewart’s extensive experience and service to the city. He noted that Stewart has played a key role in planning and responding to major events in recent years, often serving both in leadership and on the front lines.
