Montgomery, AL – On Monday, Governor Kay Ivey officially introduced the newest honorary member of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) — Vaquito, a certified service dog designated as the state’s Work Zone Safety Dog.
In a ceremony held at the Alabama State Capitol, Vaquito was sworn in as an honorary ALEA Trooper. The event was attended by Governor Ivey, ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor, Department of Public Safety Director Colonel Jonathan Archer, and Vaquito’s handler, Morris King. Vaquito takes over the role from Millie, the first Work Zone Safety K-9, who retired in February 2025 after being sworn in December 2023.
Vaquito, a graduate of Guide Dogs of America, serves as the official safety dog for the Alabama Associated General Contractors (AGC). He will accompany Morris King and ALEA Troopers at community outreach events and school programs, delivering messages about work zone safety and the dangers of distracted driving.
Governor Ivey noted the broader mission behind Vaquito’s appointment, stating the new K-9 representative highlights Alabama’s commitment to protecting road crews and promoting public safety.
ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor and Colonel Jonathan Archer both praised Vaquito’s readiness to build on the legacy of Millie by fostering public engagement and enhancing traffic safety education.
Vaquito’s responsibilities will include participation in National Work Zone Awareness Week, school visits, and traffic safety campaigns. His service dog training and public-friendly demeanor are expected to support ALEA’s mission of saving lives across the state.
Also in attendance were members of the Alabama AGC, including Carol Harris, who collaborates with Morris King to manage statewide school safety initiatives involving Vaquito.
