Jacksonville 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony

911 Remembrance Ceremony Sept. 11 @ 200 p.m. at the Jacksonville City Cemetery

Jacksonville, AL – The 21st Anniversary 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony is scheduled for Sundayat 2:00 p.m.

Sunday, September 11, is the 21st anniversary of the “9/11” terrorist attacks on the United States of America. Are you going to pause and remember the victims of the attack as well as the ways the United States and the world has changed since then?

There will be a short public opportunity for prayer and remembrance at 2:00 p.m. Sunday (September 11) to remember a Jacksonville “favorite son” and all of those who died as a result of the 9/11 terrorism.

Under the pastoral leadership of Dr. Derek Staples, lead pastor at First Baptist Church, the 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony will be held at the local 9/11 memorial at the Jacksonville City Cemetery. The memorial is in honor of Jacksonville native U.S. Army Maj. Dwayne Williams. He was working at The Pentagon that day 21 years ago when American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the west side of the building.

The Jacksonville City Cemetery is located at the intersection of Church Avenue and James Street. Local attorney George Worman will play “Taps.”

Maj. Williams was one of nearly 3,000 people – airline pilots and crew, passengers, firemen, paramedics, policemen, military service members, and a wide variety of civilians – killed by the terrorists who hijacked four commercial airliners early Tuesday morning September 11, 2001. Many remember the four flights were:
*  American Airlines Flight 11, originating in Boston, struck the north tower of the World Trade Center at 8:46 a.m.
*  United Airlines Flight 175, also originating in Boston, struck the south tower of the World Trade Center at 9:03 a.m.
*  American Airlines Flight 77, originating at Washington Dulles International Airport, crashed into The Pentagon at 9:37 a.m. and
*  United Airlines Flight 93 that originated in Newark, N.J. crashed in Pennsylvania at 10:03 a.m.
