JACKSONVILLE, AL — The Jacksonville City Council approved several resolutions, personnel actions and infrastructure-related items during its June 8 meeting, including a one-time longevity bonus for retirees, utility project approvals and employee personnel changes.
Before adopting the agenda, council members approved amendments that added consideration of Amendment No. 1 to JPWP No. 25-137, the Highway 204 gas and water relocation project, and added the resignation of City Clerk Brenda Long effective Sept. 1. Council members also removed a proposed revision to the city’s travel guidelines policy from consideration.
The council recognized the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence and a flag retirement ceremony scheduled for June 13 by the Richard L. Waters American Legion Post 57. A proclamation encouraged residents to participate in the observance.
Council members unanimously approved awarding Bid No. 26-10 for the high-pressure valve and regulator station replacement project to Southern Directional Inc. as part of JPWP No. 25-135.
The council also approved Resolution No. R-2316-26 authorizing a one-time longevity bonus for eligible City of Jacksonville and Water Works, Gas and Sewer Board retirees and beneficiaries of deceased retirees. The resolution stems from Alabama Act 2026-608, which allows participating local governments to provide a one-time payment based on years of creditable service. Agenda documents estimate the cost for Jacksonville retirees at approximately $22,961.
Additional approvals included replacing the HVAC unit at the Jacksonville Bus Barn and approving Amendment No. 1 to the Highway 204 gas and water relocation project. Supporting documents indicate the amendment adds $43,000 in work associated with unforeseen conditions encountered during construction of the ALDOT utility relocation project.
The council approved the employment of Makenzie Grace Giles as a part-time public safety communications officer and approved the promotion of James Davie Fortenberry to utility equipment operator. Members also approved the reclassification of Charles Huey from firefighter/EMT to firefighter/paramedic after obtaining paramedic certification.
Council members accepted the resignation of Police Officer Taryn Ervin effective immediately and accepted the resignation of City Clerk Brenda Long effective Sept. 1.
The council also approved budget amendments related to police department restitution funds and authorized a $17,000 purchase of a 2026 Limb Buster Tree Saw with blade for the street department.
During reports, city officials highlighted upcoming events related to America’s 250th anniversary and discussed plans for a Sept. 11 memorial observance. Council members also praised the continued growth of the Jacksonville Farmers Market and promoted upcoming community events, including the Sounds of Summer concert series.
The meeting concluded with council members entering executive session to discuss economic development matters as listed on the agenda.
