JACKSONVILLE, AL — On Saturday, June 14, American Legion Post 57 will host a full slate of family-oriented activities to commemorate Flag Day, offering the Jacksonville community a chance to honor American values while engaging in fun and educational programming. The free event will be held at the post, located at 1511 Pelham Road South.
Festivities begin at 10:30 a.m. with a U.S. Flag Protocol lesson in the Post Meeting Room, covering proper folding, display techniques, and the symbolic meaning behind each fold.
At 11:30 a.m., visitors will have the unique opportunity to tour the iconic Huey helicopter stationed on the hill, complete with photo opportunities available throughout the day. Simultaneously, guided tours of the post’s newly completed murals will take place, offering insight into their historical and patriotic significance.
From 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., a junior kids’ program for third-grade students and younger will include coloring activities and interactive flag-related experiences. Meanwhile, students in grades 4 through 12 can participate in an essay contest from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m., with gift card prizes awarded to the top three finishers in each category. Contest participants will also be introduced to leadership and scholarship opportunities through American Legion programs, including Boys/Girls State and the American Legion Oratorical Contest.
At 2:00 p.m., the Post will hold a U.S. Flag Retirement Ceremony, featuring special guest speaker Rear Admiral (Ret.) W. Kent Davis. Attendees will also have the chance to hear from other distinguished guests, including State Senator Keith Kelley, State Representative Chad Robertson, Commissioner Lee Patterson, Mayor Johnny Smith, members of the Jacksonville City Council, and officers from the Department of Alabama American Legion.
The event will conclude with a community reception at 3:00 p.m.
Throughout the day, the American Legion encourages the public to bring any worn or damaged flags in need of respectful retirement by June 10. The event will be held outdoors, and attendees are advised to dress appropriately for the weather.
Organizers emphasize that this celebration is more than a series of activities—it’s a tribute to Americanism, service, and unity. The community is invited to come for the fun and leave inspired.
