The event aims to provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to implement prescribed fire effectively. Prescribed fire, when conducted properly, can be a powerful tool for managing woodlands, promoting wildlife habitats, and maintaining ecosystem health. Participants can expect a hands-on experience, as each person will be assigned to a burn crew managed by an Alabama Certified Burn Manager. Throughout the day, attendees will have the opportunity to observe, ask questions, and even participate in igniting and holding a burn line across various fuels, terrains, and stand conditions.
It’s important to note that safety is paramount during this event. Participants will be required to sign a hold harmless liability disclosure/waiver on the day of the event. Additionally, attendees should be prepared to be active all day, including walking, wearing proper attire, and using hand tools under the direction of the burn crew.
As weather conditions play a significant role in prescribed fire operations, the burn day will be weather-dependent and chosen from the provided dates. Participants will receive a two-day advance notice regarding the confirmed burn day.
This event is free of charge, but space is limited. However, participants can earn PLM (Professional Logging Manager) and CFE (Certified Forester Education) credit hours.
