Calhoun County Gardening – The Resilient Beauty of Zinnias: Tips for Growing and Enjoying These Vibrant Flowers

Scarlet Flame Double Zinnias

Calhoun County, AL – Most gardeners agree — it’s hard to find a bad zinnia. With their wide variety of heights, colors, and styles, these hardy blooms brighten gardens all season long. A few years ago, I tried a packet of “Scarlet Flame Double Zinnia” seeds, and I was hooked. Their vertical, sturdy stalks grow 4–6 feet tall, and their double blossoms resemble the elegance of dahlias. Even better, each stalk continues to bloom until frost, provided you keep the plants deadheaded, removing spent blooms to encourage new growth. About a month before the first frost, I stop pruning so I can collect seeds for the next season.

While zinnias are reliable, they do have a few growing requirements. Their biggest problem comes from excess moisture. These flowers thrive in direct, hot sunlight and should never be planted in semi-shade. Avoid overhead sprinklers, which promote mold and fungus. Instead, water at the base of the plant once or twice a week during summer — that’s plenty.

Planting depth also matters. Rather than burying seeds deeply, I rake the soil, add an inch of sand, water it, and scatter the seeds on top. The moisture pulls the seeds into the sand naturally. With careful misting for 10–14 days, germination is almost guaranteed.

Zinnias are not only garden standouts but also last up to 10 days indoors as cut flowers. To extend their vase life, change the water daily, and if you really like a bouquet, re-cut the stems by a few inches to refresh them. Place arrangements away from direct sunlight, as heat from windows will age the flowers quickly.

Resilient, colorful, and long-lasting both in the garden and indoors, zinnias remain a gardener’s favorite for good reason.
