OXFORD, AL — The Oxford Police Department has announced that the victim injured in a shooting at the Oxford Exchange earlier this week has died.
According to Oxford Police Chief Daniel Phipps, the victim, identified as Levi Cotton, passed away early Friday morning as a result of the injuries sustained in the incident.
Chief Phipps said Mr. Cotton was an organ donor and noted that, despite the tragedy, his decision will provide the gift of life to others.
“Mr. Cotton was an organ donor, and in the midst of this tragic loss, his selfless decision will provide the gift of life to others,” Phipps said. “We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
Based on the investigation conducted so far, police said the evidence indicates the shooting appears to have been an accidental self-inflicted gunshot.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:40 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, when Oxford Police officers responded to a reported shooting at the Oxford Exchange. Upon arrival, officers located Mr. Cotton suffering from a gunshot wound. Personnel with Oxford Health Systems provided immediate medical care before he was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
At the time of the initial response, police stated there was no known threat to the public while the investigation remained active.
The investigation is ongoing.
